Just what is involved in the manufacturing of DVDs and CDs?

Glass mastering is the process of converting your data into a stamper that can be used in molding machines called "lines." Clean room technicians use a laser beam recorder to burn the information into the "resist" which is situated on the glass substrate. The resist is hardened and removed from the glass. A mirror image referred to as the "mother" is created and from that any number of stampers are formed.

Stampers are then loaded into replication lines where polycarnbinate pellets are melted and injected into the mold. After molding, the disc is coated with a metal layer and a lacquer layer.

The discs are then loaded into a printing machine that either offsets or silk screens the artwork directly to the surface of the disc.

Due to the complexity of this process and the setup time involved, low quantity runs are cost prohibitive. Replicated media are usually ordered in quanitities of 1000 or more. Also, the process is time consuming. Standard manufacturing orders will take between two and three weeks to complete. They can be done more quickly with a hefty rush charge.
